ABC News’ “GMA3: What You Need to Know” launches “GMA3 Cool to Be Kind” today, a special multimedia campaign that spotlights the power of kindness while encouraging people to practice acts of kindness actively throughout their daily lives. “GMA3”’s recurring initiative features ongoing coverage on the multitude of ways practicing kindness impacts oneself, relationships and the community, including informative discussions with kindness specialists, interviews with leaders and organizations spreading kindness, and an interactive call to action for viewers at home to join the movement and share the ways in which they act with kindness. “GMA3” taps ABC News’ Will Ganss to serve as its Kindness Correspondent.
“Kindness is a critical pillar of humanity because the smallest act of kindness has the power to set a ripple effect into motion, turn someone’s day around and help build a stronger, happier and healthier community,” said Catherine McKenzie, executive producer for “GMA3.” “We’re excited to utilize our platform to inform, inspire and invite people to practice kindness, however big or small, as we go on this journey.”
“GMA3 Cool to Be Kind” kicks off Monday, May 22, with a look at the mental and physical benefits that being kind can have. Monday’s coverage continues with cameras following Ganss as he hits the streets of New York City and inspires strangers to practice random acts of kindness on the air. Kindness expert Houston Kraft joins as a guest and shares tips on incorporating more kindness into day-to-day life, while Tamlin Hall, founder of Hope Givers, discusses how his nonprofit spreads kindness in the community and serves as a safe space for struggling teens to discuss their emotions.

‘Trashed: The Secret Life of Plastic Recycling’ Airs on Tuesday, May 23, at 8:30 p.m.EDT/9:30 p.m. PDT

A new ABC News Live special, “Trashed: The Secret Life of Plastic Recycling,” launches an unprecedented environmental investigation into where America’s plastic bag recycling goes. ABC News Live and the ABC News investigative unit teamed up with nine ABC stations across the country, using tracking devices to trace 46 bundles of plastic bags from Walmart and Target drop-off bins to their final destinations, uncovering some shocking findings about how few may actually get recycled. The 30-minute special also examines the impacts of plastic and other pollution on communities across the country and features an interview with a leading group representing the plastics industry, with reporting from chief national correspondent Matt Gutman.

ABC News’ Emmy®-Award winning “Soul of a Nation” returns with a special presentation, “The New Face of Hollywood,” in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The one-hour primetime special delves into the rise of Asians in Hollywood, following the historic Oscars® sweep of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the blockbuster multiverse film about the struggles of a Chinese American immigrant family. “Nightline” co-anchor Juju Chang sits down with trailblazing star Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian woman in history to win an Oscar® for Best Actress, and Ke Huy Quan, the former child star who won Best Supporting Actor after a 20-year hiatus from acting. Chang’s intimate interviews with Yeoh and Quan detail their personal journeys, their experiences through the highs and lows of fame, the setbacks often faced by Asian actors in Hollywood, and how their triumphant Oscar wins reverberated throughout the Asian American community and beyond.
The special will also take an unvarnished look at the complex history of Asians in Hollywood, including discrimination, bias and problematic portrayals, featuring interviews with legendary performer James Hong, one of the most prolific Asian American actors of all time; Anna Wong, the niece and namesake of the first Chinese American film star Anna May Wong; and trailblazing actress Nancy Kwan, who catapulted to fame in the ‘60s.
“The New Face of Hollywood” celebrates visibility and the power of representation with stars and creatives who are currently writing a new chapter in Hollywood, including Jonathan Wang, Oscar-winning producer of “Everything Everywhere All at Once”; Hawaiian Chinese actor Jason Scott Lee, star of the Disney+ series “Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.” and the new Hawaiian-language film “The Wind and The Reckoning”; Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, star of the popular teen comedy series “Never Have I Ever”; Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Kelvin Yu, creator of the new Disney+ series “American Born Chinese”; and Adele Lim, co-screenwriter of “Crazy Rich Asians,” and director of the upcoming film “Joy Ride.” The special will also feature insight on Asian American representation in film from columnist Wajahat Ali, author, “Go Back to Where You Came From”; Rebecca Sun, senior editor, diversity and inclusion at The Hollywood Reporter; and writer Jeff Yang, co-author, “RISE: A Pop History of Asian America from the Nineties to Now”; and sociologist and pop culture expert Nancy Wang Yuen, author of “Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism.”

Today, ABC Audio announced four different specials available to affiliates for Memorial Day weekend. Programming includes two music specials ― a summer country music tour hosted by Parmalee’s Matt Thomas and a rock music special celebrating albums turning 50 this year — as well as in-depth coverage on the one-year mark of the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School with “Uvalde 365” and “America Remembers,” highlighting war heroes and veterans.
Matt Thomas of chart-topping country group Parmalee hosts “Summer Road Trip,” highlighting the year’s hottest summer country tours. Listeners will hear from country music superstars like Luke Combs, Dierks Bentley, Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood and more.
“Memorial Day 50,” hosted by ABC Audio’s Matt Wolfe, highlights top rock albums and songs that debuted in 1973 — 50 years ago. Artists featured include Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zeppelin and more.
“Uvalde 365” chronicles the series of events that took place on May 24, 2022, in Uvalde, Texas, when a teenager opened fire in an elementary school, taking the lives of 19 students and two teachers. This one-hour program hosted by ABC News correspondent Michelle Franzen is part of a larger ABC News initiative, Uvalde: 365, in which a team embedded in the community for one year following survivors and families of victims as they cope with the loss of their loved ones and the inaction of the police, their fight for justice, and developments in the investigation.
ABC News Radio’s “America Remembers,” hosted by correspondent Alex Stone, reports on America’s heroes. The special features Iraq and Afghanistan veterans still struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including combat veteran Steven Padilla, who battles with PTSD after a roadside bomb hit his convoy. The program also highlights gold star family members who have lost loved ones during their time of service and discusses how they are moving through their grief.
